2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the explosion in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
