Blue Jays One Step Away of Glory After Rookie Phenom Tames Los Angeles in Fifth Match

Trey Yesavage turned in a legendary performance and Davis Schneider homered on the very first pitch as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Dodgers 6–1 on Wednesday, moving within one victory of their first championship since the 1993 season.

Yesavage's Historic Outing

The young Yesavage, who made his major league debut in September, struck out 12 without issuing a walk – achieving a historic World Series first. The first-year pitcher surrendered just one run on three hits over seven frames. His year commenced in the low minors with minimal fanfare, but has now started and won two of Toronto’s three victories in this seven-game set.

Early Offensive Explosion

Toronto’s hitters jumped out to a fast lead. On the first pitch of the game, Schneider connected with a high-velocity fastball and homered to left field. Just moments later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr followed with another blast to almost the exact same place. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that back-to-back homers started a game, stunning the crowd before most had found their seats.

Yesavage Takes Control

Yesavage then went to work. He struck out five consecutive batters between the early frames, breaking a rookie pitching record before Hernández ended the run with a solo shot in the bottom of the third to make it 2–1. That was the Dodgers' closest approach.

Extending the Lead

In the fourth inning, Varsho lined a triple into the right-field corner after a fielding error, and Clement delivered a sacrifice fly to bring him home for a 3–1 lead. The Los Angeles offense continued to sputter from there. After managing six runs in a lengthy extra-inning contest, they’ve scored a mere four times in nearly 30 innings.

Late Inning Insurance

The Dodgers starter persisted for over six frames but exited in the seventh after the bases became full. Both runners he left behind came around to score – thanks to a errant throw and one more on a base hit – to make it 5–1. A hit in the eighth provided the last run.

Relievers Seal the Deal

Yesavage was cheered off the field from the traveling fans, and the relievers finished the job. The late-inning pitchers each tossed a shutout frame to secure the victory, recording three strikeouts together while preserving the rookie’s masterpiece.

Dodgers' Lineup Shuffle Falters

The Dodgers, who rearranged their batting order in an attempt to generate runs, again couldn't find momentum. Their key batter went hitless in four at-bats and is now without a hit in his last seven appearances since setting a World Series on-base record in Game 3.

On the Verge of a Championship

Now up 3–2, Toronto head back to their home ballpark with two chances to clinch. Friday evening features Game 6 at their home field.
