Homeland Security personnel have been deployed to the Democratic-run city as part of the Trump administration's growing campaign on undocumented immigration, according to authority reports.

The initiative, called "The Charlotte Initiative", was announced on recently, with representatives stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be primary subjects in the city.

"Our department is deploying Homeland Security personnel to this location to maintain public safety and eliminate security risks," a spokesperson stated.

Municipal leaders, including the city's chief executive, published a joint statement opposing the campaign, saying it was causing "unwarranted anxiety and confusion" in the resident base.

Specialized transport and tactical squads could be participating in the local crackdown, according to internal government documents.

Multiple congregants working on grounds at a eastern Charlotte church fled into woods when authorities descended, with a person being apprehended, according to witness statements.

"We believed the church was secure and we would be undisturbed," a young bystander stated to media.

Political Context

Since the administration's continuation, national forces have been deployed to various urban centers including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to implement the commitment of "an unprecedented removal initiative" in American history.

The Department of Homeland Security said they are carrying out the campaign because North Carolina has not respected the nearly 1,400 immigration agency persons held, meaning they had been freed due to "local regulations".

City Status

The city is not a sanctuary city - urban areas that have policies in place to reduce support given to national immigration agencies - but it is a "designated immigrant-friendly municipality". This is a formal designation for municipalities that are dedicated to immigrant integration.

"The administration and its leadership will step up to protect Americans when municipal leaders won't," representatives stated.

Charlotte is an demographically mixed city, with about nearly one-fifth of residents being immigrants, according to census information.

Federal authorities has not said how long the operations will continue. Windy City enforcement, which started last fall is persisting.

Earlier in the week, US Representative and Democrat, Alma Adams said she was informed of the initiative and was "seriously troubled" about Border Patrol and ICE agents coming to the state.
